All across Santorini and surrounding small islands are fantastically steep hills that Superman would have problems walking up. So the local old guys have lots and lots of mules (donkeys) and horses to take you up and down. Then they feed them and the trouble starts. Yes, they poo early and often and when you least expect it. Walk behind them too closely and you will have it all over your clothes – possibly as high as shoulder level. You will get it on your shoes. It is going to happen. Make sure they are good shoes. Flip-flops + Poo? Yuck! Watch where you walk – very carefully!!

The town of Fira has all the basic shops required with a couple of small supermarkets, a bookshop (with some English titles) and
the various other necessary bits and bobs but most of the main street is very upscale arts and craft, jewelry and designer clothes shops aimed, I should imagine, at the cruise shoppers who stop off for the day. However there are some interesting ones and here's one that caught my eye:

To be honest, most of the reviews describing the roads of Santorini as dangerous are not entirely accurate. Given that you will be hard pressed to get over 40mph even on good days, the notion that Greek drivers are tearing round the island like lunatics is just not true. Sure, there are a handful of nutters there, but the best thing to do with them is simply let them pass. The moped riders do tend to overtake on the outside or inside, depending where there is more room, but any competent driver who can drive defensively, knows that that's what the mirrors are for! Keep your wits about you, don't be intimidated, and you will find Santorini a great place to drive. The UK is much worse in most respects.
Narrow roads? - look ahead and be prepared to stop if something big appears. It's not brain surgery, just common sense. Enjoy the island and stay safe.
