HOKKAIDO

Hokkaido at a glance

Japan's northernmost and second largest island, Hokkaido's vast nature make it a popular tourist destination. The peak travel seasons are summer, when the mild weather attracts campers, cyclists, and hikers, and winter, when thick snow powders the island's ski slopes and rising steam beckons visitors to its many hot springs. The Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) held every year in February is one of the most popular festivals in Japan.

Hokkaido is also home to Japan's indigenous people, the Ainu, who are said to have settled the area some 20,000 years ago. The Japanese, on the other hand, began moving to the area in earnest during the Meiji Period, when the government promoted migration to Hokkaido to protect Japan's northern front from Russian expansionism. Ainu culture has played an important role in shaping Hokkaido's history and many of the area names, including the capital of Sapporo, come from the Ainu language.

After heavily discriminating against the Ainu for over a century, the Japanese government finally passed a law in 1998 to use government funds to research and promote Ainu language and culture. The past few decades has seen a resurgence in Ainu culture and many children of Ainu who hid their identity due to cultural persecution now take pride in their Ainu heritage.

Today, Hokkaido is famous for some of Japan's tastiest foods, including crab, Sapporo ramen noodles, salmon roe, sea urchin, and Sapporo Beer.

NIGHTLIFE

Santorini Island is also famous for its lively nightlife. You can find all kind of popular santorini night life in the main touristic areas such as Fira, Oia, Perisa and Kamari.

Fira is the most popular place in Santorini and many cafe bars or clubs are situated along the Caldera (the cliff).

Some of the cafes are offering a fantastic view over one of the world's most famous sunset.

Searching for a lively nightlife in Santorini, Oia must be the quieter place.

Oia is a world known place for just married couples and for this reason it is full of romantic cafes-bars breathtaking view.

ARCHITECTURE

The fear of pirates was the main cause for the inhabitants of Santorini Greece to build their houses on sites far from the sea, on high cliffs.

The villages of Santorini are similar to the other villages of the Cycladic islands: beautiful small white houses in narrow paved streets.

That kind of building was used for several reasons, like the restricted number of safe spaces, the protection from the wind in winter and the solar heat in summer, defence, the rarity of construction

materials, and also the strong communal spirit.

Today, many modern settlements have appeared near the sea, in areas as Kamari or Perissa, but have lost all the elements of the traditional architecture.

The villages of Santorini Greece were the traditional architecture can be seen are: Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, Megalohori and others...

DIVING
Volcano santorini diving centers is the outcome of thirty

years of experience in instructing scuba divers of every

level, from usual pleasure dives to deep wreck dives in

the open sea at depths of up to 120 metres. It was established

by Vangelis Sotiriou, one of the first people to introduce

scuba diving in Greece. The instructors at Volcano Diving

Center are experienced instructors in both air and mixed

gas diving, with thousands of dives in all conditions.

What to buy: Women's clothes, accessories, men's clothes, fashion design, beachwear

What to pay: Value for money

HANDICRAFT

The town of Fira has all the basic shops required with a couple of small supermarkets, a bookshop (with some English titles) and the various other necessary bits and bobs but most of the main street is very upscale arts and craft, jewelry and designer clothes shops aimed, I should imagine, at the cruise shoppers who stop off for the day. However there are some interesting ones and here's one that caught my eye:

WARNINGS AND DANGERS

EVERYWHERE in Santorini there are young (and not so young) people clogging up the roads on monkey bikes and quads. The speed of the traffic tends to be dictated by them, and if you hire a car, be prepared to wait or get used to overtaking them a lot.

To be honest, most of the reviews describing the roads of Santorini as dangerous are not entirely accurate. Given that you will be hard pressed to get over 40mph even on good days, the notion that Greek drivers are tearing round the island like lunatics is just not true. Sure, there are a handful of nutters there, but the best thing to do with them is simply let them pass. The moped riders do tend to overtake on the outside or inside, depending where there is more room, but any competent driver who can drive defensively, knows that that's what the mirrors are for! Keep your wits about you, don't be intimidated, and you will find Santorini a great place to drive. The UK is much worse in most respects.

Narrow roads? - look ahead and be prepared to stop if something big appears. It's not brain surgery, just common sense. Enjoy the island and stay safe.

DONKEYS AND MULES

All across Santorini and surrounding small islands are fantastically steep hills that Superman would have problems walking up. So the local old guys have lots and lots of mules (donkeys) and horses to take you up and down. Then they feed them and the trouble starts. Yes, they poo early and often and when you least expect it. Walk behind them too closely and you will have it all over your clothes – possibly as high as shoulder level. You will get it on your shoes. It is going to happen. Make sure they are good shoes. Flip-flops + Poo? Yuck! Watch where you walk – very carefully!!
